"Get Ready for This" is a 1991 Eurodance single by Belgium-Holland dance group 2 Unlimited from their debut album Get Ready!. It is arguably the most famous of the band's singles in the United States; having reached #38 on the Billboard Top 40, making it the band's only Top 40 hit. However, its success was eclipsed elsewhere in the world by their fifth single "No Limit".[1]

The famous repeated line "Y'all ready for this?" is sampled from The D.O.C.'s hit single "It's Funky Enough".

The song is considered one of the most frequently played songs at sporting events around the world[2], such as the opening song for the Green Bay Packers in Superbowl XLV as well as serving as the opening song at one time for the NBA teams Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs as well as several Major League Baseball teams, including the Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres, and the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL, and the goal song at one time or another for two other NHL teams, the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, and has been included on the sports compilation CD Jock Jams, Volume 1, and in the movie Space Jam starring Michael Jordan.

The song has also appeared in the film Bring It On, on the television series Moesha and in the popular TV comedy series Friends (Season 3 episode 9: The One With The Football). Its status as a sports anthem was parodied by Beavis and Butthead when Beavis asks if they are watching an American football game when the music video to the song comes on.[3] It also appeared in How to Eat Fried Worms.

Release and reception

Originally, the single was released as an instrumental (entitled the "Orchestral Mix") in 1991. Conscious of their popularity, Wilde & De Coster wanted a more accessible, formatted formula for their project to grow. Raymond Lothar Slijngaard was then contacted to write lyrics and add a rap to the track. On his suggestion, Anita Doth joined in as the female vocalist, the single also appearing on Technomania Vol. 3.

Some months later the rap version was released, this time with raps by group member Ray Slijngaard and vocals by group member Anita Doth. However, for the UK release of the single, an edit of the original "Orchestral mix" was used, without vocals from the song except for the sampled "Y'all ready for this?" line. This was done by record producer Pete Waterman, who owned the record label 2 Unlimited were licensed to for UK releases. Subsequent 2 Unlimited releases would restore singer Anita Doth's vocals, but Raymond Slijngaard's raps would be cut out for several releases to come, including those of the subsequent singles "Twilight Zone" (1992) and "No Limit" (1993). "Get Ready for This" was an immediate success, reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart and #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play charts, as well as reaching #38 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite the song's immense worldwide popularity, very few original versions (not remixes) of it are available on the UK iTunes Store or any of the original songs from 2 Unlimited's album Get Ready!, the only one of this song being the Rapversion Edit, on the soundtrack for the film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. No other original version of the song is available for iTunes purchase.

Yves De Ruyter remix

After the moderate success of the 2 Unlimited compilation album Greatest Hits Remixes in 2001, two white labels were released with remixes of "Get Ready for This". The first 12" was released in May 2001 in Belgium with a Trance remix by heavy weight DJ/producer Yves De Ruyter. Although just a single sided pressing featuring the full 12" remix, the radio edit was officially released later in the 2002 release Trance Remixes (Special Edition).

Originally, the remix De Ruyter made was to be released in the 2001 release of Greatest Hits Remixes but was one of the stolen master tapes taken to Russia for a bootleg release in 2000.

Robbie Rivera remixes

Following the May 2001 release of the Yves De Ruyter remixes, August the same year saw the release of the another "Get Ready for This" remix by Puerto Rican DJ/producer Robbie Rivera. Also released on white label, these remixes focussed more on the Latino House genre with some sleight of hand cross-overs into other House genres.

Roughly mixed, and clouded in samples from other sources, the release also had very little success, but is now regarded as a collectable item and is sought after by fans of Robbie Rivera and 2 Unlimited.

The Robbie Rivera remixes were never released officially anywhere else.
